Currently when using self-signed certificates it seems very hard to federate with other pump.io servers so it may be that although GNU Social is an older system it may still be more practical. Using a self-signed certificate you can only use pump.io as a /data silo/ which won't federate with other servers.
For a pump.io site you will need a separate domain/subdomain, so see [[Setting up a web site]] for details of how to create an Apache configuration for your site. If you're using freedns then you will need to create a new subdomain.
